Charmed life: Secondhand Feels owes kismet, ‘Jam Shack’ for getting the band together

There is no shortage of talented musicians in Anchorage, but sometimes it can take a while to find the right combination of players. In the case of up-and-coming rockers Secondhand Feels, it took a complicated game of seven degrees of separation to finalize their three-piece outfit. “Originally, it was two much older friends and me, but then we lost our drummer, and I found Craig [Lematta] through a friend of a friend of a friend,” laughs Secondhand Feels singer Grant Slama. “Then we lost our other older guy, and it was just a singer and drums—it was sad times for us as a band.” Despite having more lineup changes than gigs, Slama and Lematta continued to jam while hunting for a bassist. Apart from being the most beautiful thing either had seen, Ava Rose was remarkably ordinary and in good health. For a year, the happy parents enjoyed the trials of raising a newborn but at her one-year check-up, they received some alarming news. “Her pediatrician said she wasn’t hitting her gross motor skills and developmental benchmarks,” recalls Redfield.
