New Zealand recording artist Sammy J to perform at Williwaw

Fans of Common Kings can rejoice as fellow Island Empire Records artist Sammy J will be making a pit stop for one show at Williwaw on Saturday, Aug. 5.

The New Zealand native embraces his Maori and Polynesian roots to create uniquely positive and uplifting music by mixing together island reggae, soul and jazz with heartfelt lyrics. But don’t be fooled by his influences, Sammy J's sound isn’t all just chill island vibes, the singer’s performances have often been dubbed exhilarating and intoxicating.

“I think as kiwi artists we try so hard to duplicate what's already out there. I'm a firm believer in bringing original art to the table and making a genuine connection with my fans and my people,” he explained.

His 2014 single “No Sleep” worked its way onto the Billboard Top 40 reggae chart and amassed over 300,000 views on YouTube. Released only four months ago, Sammy J’s newest single “Do You” has already been viewed nearly 200,000 times on YouTube and shows no signs of slowing down. Undoubtedly, “Do You” will have Alaskan concert goers swaying a singing along.

Despite his success, the soft spoken kiwi has remains humble about his music and sticks close to his philanthropist roots. When not touring Sammy J works as a social worker where he mentors troubled youth and offers them a positive outlet to focus their energy by overseeing a music therapy program. For now though, Sammy J is thrilled to be on the road and can’t wait to make his way back to Alaska.
